Architectural audio integration within a designed members lounge interior, London
Architectural Audio Consultancy

Architectural Audio Consultancy London

Sonic Design Studios provides architectural audio consultancy for projects where sound must be considered as part of the design language, not added as an afterthought. We work with architects, interior designers, and operators to shape systems that support the space visually, acoustically, and operationally.

The Overlooked Layer

Sound is architecture

Sound is one of the most overlooked elements in a space, yet it has one of the biggest impacts on how people feel within it.

At Sonic Design Studios, we work as an acoustic consultant in London for hospitality venues, private residences and design led developments. We work with architects, interior designers and developers to ensure sound is considered from the very beginning, not added as an afterthought. Our approach extends from hospitality acoustic design to residential audio and sound system design for restaurants.

Whether it's a restaurant in Mayfair, a private members club in Soho, or a high-end home in Chelsea, the way a space sounds directly affects atmosphere, comfort and overall experience. Our role is to design sound that enhances the space, not competes with it.

Definition

Acoustic consultancy for design led spaces

Architectural audio consultancy is the process of designing how sound behaves within a space, both technically and experientially.

It goes beyond simply choosing speakers. A sound design consultancy considers the complete acoustic environment, including:

  • Understanding how sound travels through materials
  • Integrating systems discreetly into architecture and interiors
  • Ensuring clarity, balance and consistency across the space
  • Designing for both function and atmosphere

The result is a space where sound feels intentional, controlled and aligned with the design vision. We work across London including Mayfair, Chelsea, Kensington, Soho, Notting Hill and Fulham, bringing this expertise to every project.

Impact

Why sound design matters

Poor sound design is one of the fastest ways to undermine an otherwise beautiful space.

Common issues include spaces that are too loud or too quiet, uneven sound distribution, echo and poor acoustics, and visible or intrusive speaker systems.

This doesn't just affect comfort. It impacts:

  • How long guests stay
  • How much they spend
  • How the brand is perceived
  • Guest comfort and wellbeing
  • The emotional resonance of the space

Well-designed audio creates atmosphere, enhances emotion and supports the overall identity of the space. This is why hospitality audio consultancy is increasingly seen as essential.

Methodology

Our process

01

Concept Stage

We work with architects and designers early to understand the vision and define the audio strategy.

02

Acoustic Planning

We assess materials, layouts and spatial dynamics to ensure sound behaves correctly.

03

System Design

We specify the right equipment and speaker placement for both performance and discretion.

04

Integration

We coordinate with contractors and installers to ensure the system is implemented correctly.

05

Final Tuning

We fine-tune the system on-site to achieve the intended atmosphere and balance.

This structured approach ensures sound is resolved as part of the design process, not bolted on at completion. Learn more about our full audio design framework.

Pitfalls

Common mistakes we see

Many projects bring us in after problems have already occurred. Understanding these common issues helps teams plan better from the outset.

Audio considered too late

By the time sound is addressed, design decisions limit what's possible.

Relying only on installers

Installers focus on equipment, not overall experience or acoustic design.

Ignoring acoustics

Hard surfaces and open layouts can create echo and distortion if not planned properly.

Over or under-specifying systems

Too much power creates discomfort, too little creates inconsistency.

Addressing these early avoids costly corrections later. Our approach to restaurant sound system design exemplifies how early involvement prevents these issues.

Experience

Project experience

We have worked across a range of high-end environments including:

Each project requires a tailored approach, balancing technical performance with design integrity.

Global Reach

Working internationally

While based in London, we work on projects internationally, including across the UAE and Europe.

We collaborate remotely with design teams and travel for key project stages where required. Our process is designed to integrate seamlessly into global projects, ensuring consistency from concept through to completion. Recent international collaborations include destinations such as Dubai, Ras Al Khaimah, Ibiza and Marbella.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Architectural audio consultancy is the process of designing how sound behaves within a built environment, covering speaker specification, acoustic treatment, system infrastructure and integration with the architecture. It ensures that audio is considered alongside materials, lighting and spatial planning from the earliest design stages.

An AV installer fits equipment according to a specification. An architectural audio consultant creates that specification, defining the sonic strategy, system architecture, acoustic approach and how the audio integrates with the interior. The consultant works at the design level, the installer works at the implementation level.

At concept or schematic stage, before ceiling details, services routing and finishes are fixed. Early engagement allows speaker positions, cable routes and acoustic treatment to be resolved as part of the architecture. The later audio is addressed, the more expensive and compromised the result.

Yes. Architectural loudspeakers can be fully concealed within ceilings, walls and bespoke joinery when planned early with the design team. Speaker positions are coordinated with lighting layouts and ventilation grilles so that the audio system is invisible while still performing properly.

Yes. Most of our projects involve joining the design team at concept or schematic stage. We attend design team meetings, review drawings, advise on material implications for acoustics, and produce documentation that coordinates with the wider architectural drawing set.

Acoustic consultancy addresses how the room itself behaves, including reverberation, absorption and sound isolation. Sound system design addresses how audio is introduced into that room through loudspeaker selection, placement, zoning and control. In practice, both disciplines need to be considered together for the best result.
