Architectural Audio Consultancy

ArchitecturalAudioforHumanPerformance

We move beyond technical acoustic compliance to design environments that respect the natural limits of the human nervous system. By integrating sculptural audio hardware with our developing Cognitive Load Index framework, we create spaces that speak before anyone in them does.

Philosophy

The Compliance
Paradox

It is a recurring issue in modern design that a room can pass every technical acoustic standard on the books and yet remain a fundamentally exhausting space to occupy. Traditional measurements such as reverberation time and background noise levels represent a technical floor rather than a performance ceiling. While a space may appear compliant on a spreadsheet, the actual experience of the occupant is often one of accumulated fatigue and diminished focus.

The CLI Edge

At Sonic Design Studios, we are working to bridge this gap. Our design process is informed by our proprietary Cognitive Load Index (CLI), a research framework developed to quantify listening effort and prevent the mental fatigue built into many modern environments. By shifting the focus from the building to the brain, we ensure that every architectural decision supports sustained engagement and neurological comfort.

Claude's

Company: Sonic Design Studios  |  Location: London, UK

Concealed beneath the Chotto Matte restaurant in Soho, Claude's is an intimate basement members' lounge defined by atmosphere rather than scale. The interior, designed by Nadia Sousa of Superfutures, is richly layered, combining sculptural seating, saturated colour, muralled surfaces, and a highly controlled lighting scheme to create a space that feels immersive without excess.

Sonic Design Studios was appointed to design and integrate a complete audio system for the basement, with a brief aligned closely to the architectural intent.

"Sound was treated not as an overlay, but as an embedded spatial component, expected to carry weight and physicality while remaining visually and perceptually discreet."

Client Testimonials

“From the initial consultation through to final installation, the process was smooth, professional, and impressively efficient. They took the time to understand our specific needs, offered tailored recommendations, and executed everything with precision and care. The end result exceeded expectations, not only in terms of performance but also in aesthetic integration and user friendliness.”

Mastering the Energy Band

We model the specific service arc of a venue to ensure the atmosphere remains vibrant without becoming fatiguing. By managing the Lombard Effect, we protect your reputation and ensure guests leave with the same level of energy they had when they arrived.

Workplace

Protecting Cognitive Bandwidth

Modern offices are frequently at odds with our biological processing limits. We design precise acoustic zones that support deep focus and effortless collaboration, significantly reducing the distraction ripple that drains team productivity throughout the day. We use our CLI framework to design spaces that maximise speech clarity and minimise cognitive burden, ensuring inhabitants can engage without unnecessary effort.

Active Research / Development

The Science of Effort:
The CLI Framework

Behind every Sonic Design Studios project is our proprietary Cognitive Load Index. Currently in active development, this framework allows us to look beyond the decibel and measure the actual acoustic burden placed on the human brain within the built environment. We examine four critical domains of research to inform our design intuition:

AIL

Acoustic Interference

Objective mapping of speech clarity and signal-to-noise ratios.

PVI

Population Vulnerability

Accounting for neurodiversity and the specific requirements of the intended user group.

EDS

Environmental Design

Evaluating how spatial layouts and material palettes support or hinder mental recovery.

TLR

Temporal Load

Predicting how the performance of a room degrades over time as occupancy increases.

The Process

Sound as
Architectural Language

Audio integration is uniquely sensitive to timing within the project lifecycle. Engaging our consultancy during the schematic design phase is the only true window for seamless integration, allowing sound to be treated as a spatial force rather than a technical afterthought.

We treat loudspeakers as sculptural centrepieces, coordinating their placement with the architectural rhythm and material palette so precisely that they read as indigenous to the environment.
